As you can see, there are no glass pitcher filters in this list.

Why?

The choice is very limited - we just wrote a complete post about all glass pitchers with a filter we could find.

Brita Grand 10-cup water filter pitcher with electronic indicator

Brita Grand Filter PitcherLet me start with something, that may not be so obvious. All Brita pitcher water filters are similar when in their ability to reduce contaminants. So, while I picked the Brita Grand 10-cup to compare here, Brita has a wide range of pitcher-style filters in various sizes and colors to suit your taste.

That may also be one of the reasons for the popularity of Brita pitchers. Brita produces pitchers in various sizes and colors. And you can all use them with the Standard filter or the slightly more expensive Longlast filter.

Brita's Standard pitcher filters are quite capable of reducing chlorine taste and odor, copper, cadmium and mercury. Unfortunately, Brita pitcher filters can not deal with fluoride effectively.

On the other hand, the Brita Longlast filter reduces chlorine, particulate class 1, cadmium, mercury, lead, asbestos, and benzene. As the name suggests, it also last longer. You can use it for up to three times the amount of water compared to the Brita Standard filter.

Some models, like the one I talk about here, have an electronic filter indicator. Most other Brita model don't. But that makes them a bit cheaper.

The pitchers and filter are BPA-free.

Pro’s

  • Less refills as it holds up to 10 cups of water.
  • Filter change reminder
  • Wide color choice available.
  • Usable with Standard or Longlast filter element.

Con's

  • Lid may fall off when you pour.
  • Easy fill lid does not stay in place.

Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher - Fluoride and Lead Removal

Aquagear Fluoride Filter PitcherThe Aquagear water filter pitcher might not be the best looking, but is removes a lot of contaminants with one filter element. The USA made pitcher can clean 150 gallons before your need a new filter.

And I like the Aquagear recycling program. To ensure, that all parts are recycled, you can send the used filter back to them, free of charge. You just need to email them, and they send you a shipping label.

The Aquagear filter is EPA/ANSI certified. It meets and exceeds NSF Standards 42 and 53 for contaminant reduction and these claims are backed up by independent, ISO 17025 certified labs. You can see details of all test results on their website.

Apart from the usual contaminants the other filters on this page remove, the Aquagear pitcher reduces chlorine (99.99%), lead (97.5%), fluoride (90%), mercury (99.6%), trihalomethanes (99.99%), DDT (98.8%), and even Chromium-6 (99.87%).

In case you are interested, the pitcher is not only BPA-free, Aquagear builts it from vegan, food-grade material.

Only if you want a choice of colors, forms or sizes, Aquagear is not your pitcher manufacturer. They just have this 8-cup pitcher water filter in their program.

Pro’s

  • Test results are public.
  • Great contaminant removal rates
  • Made in the USA.

Con's

  • No choice in size or color.

PUR 7-Cup Ultimate - Budget Choice

PUR filter pitchers come in two sizes and two color variants. Some models, like the one I review here, can hold 7 cups and sport an electronic filter change indicator. A cool feature, but not essential.

Another big plus of this filter is the NSF certification against NSF/ANSI standards 42 and 53. ThePUR Ultimate pitcher (PPT711W) removes lead, mercury, chlorine, and certain pesticides.

The filter element contains activated carbon and ion exchange resin. It is good for 30 gallons, less than most other pitcher filters. Same as most other charcoal filters, you should only use for maximum 2 month.

Unfortunately, these filter changes take some time as you have to soak the filter for 15 minutes. So avoid filter changes in the morning, when you are in a rush to go to work.

The 7-cup version with it's slim design fits into most fridge doors, so you can keep your water cool. Other design features include an comfortable handle and an easy-fill lid. The spout has a cover to protect your filtered water. And of course, the pitcher is BPA Free.

The new design gets mixed grades from customers. While some are really happy with it and experience no problems, others complain about the mess when they pour water. The solution seems to be the angle you hold it. When you try to pour slowly, it drips, while pouring fast works better.

Pro’s

  • Removes lead
  • Filters quickly
  • Filter change reminder

Con's

  • You need to soak filters before 1st use.
  • Easy-fill lid tends to fall off.

Propur Water Filter Pitcher - Highest Capacity

Propur Pitcher for lead removal

The Propur water filter pitcher comes with a ProOne-G 2.0 mini filter and also has a removable fruit infuser. It keeps healthy minerals in your water, too.

It is quite expensive compared to a Brita. On the other hand, you get a pitcher that can remove a wide range of contaminants from heavy metals to VOC’s, monochloramines, pesticides, herbicides and pharmaceutical drugs.

With it' s 10.5"H x 5"W x 10.5"L dimension you can also keep it in the fridge, if you prefer to drink cold water.

What I also like about this pitcher is, that the filter is sitting above the filtered water. So the filtered water does not touch the filter all the time.

How effective is the Propur Pitcher against fluoride?
The filter in this jug is a smaller version of their highly effective gravity filter element. It is a combination of silver infused (no colloidal silver!) white ceramic and a media based on granular activated carbon.

Here is a screen shot from the test results for fluoride, posted by Propur. They had this filter tested in an independent lab. The reduction rate is quite impressive.

The filter lasts about six months and costs around $40.

Pro’s

  • Reduces Lead and Fluoride.
  • Filter lasts for more than 200 gal.
  • Low cost per gallon

Con's

  • Only available in blue.
  • Pitcher itself is pricey.

Invigorated Living pH REFRESH Alkaline Water Pitcher

Invigorated Living pH REFRESH Alkaline Water Pitcher
The Invigorated Living pH REFRESH alkaline water pitcher is very popular. It comes with a proprietary filter containing activated carbon, tourmaline, Maifan balls, Far Infrared balls, Zeolite, a micro net and PP layer.

Most of the filter content is for taste and odor improvement, and a lot of people prefer alkaline water. Plus it adds minerals to your water.

Although it removes some fluoride, emphasis is on “some”. Not a surprise. You can not expect a small filter with very limited amount of activated carbon to remove a lot of fluoride.

Does this make the water healthier than other filters? In theory, maybe.

Invigorated Living advertises a lot of certifications, only none of them proof filter results. This is a bit misleading in my opinion. It would be nice to see filter results, at least from certified labs.

Pro’s

  • Alkaline water with long lasting filters.
  • Does not contain any plastic.

Con's

  • Missing proof of filter results

Invigorated Living pH RESTORE Alkaline Water Pitcher

Invigorated Living pH Restore Alkaline Water Pitcher
The pH Restore alkaline filter from Invigorated Living uses the same filter as the pH Refresh model. The main difference is the pitcher size, a plus as you do not have to refill that often.

For everyone who wants to keep track, the digital filter indicator is a nice addition.

Pro’s

  • Alkaline water with long lasting filters.
  • Easy fill lid
  • Filter change reminder

Con's

  • Missing proof of filter results

Seychelle pH2O Dual Alkaline Water Pitcher

Seychelle pH2O Dual Alkaline Water Filter
The Seychelle PH2O filters fast due to two filter cartridges. And once the filtration slows down, you can flush them to improve the speed again. Only if that does not help, it is time to replace the filters.

The manufacturer believes there is no need for a filter indicator as very slow filtration speed will indicate it’s time for a replacement.

The filters are tested by an independent lab and the results are published by Seychelle. The tests indicate a reduction of a wide range of contaminants, including fluoride, lead and VOC’s. They are not backed by NSF certification, though.

Pro’s

  • Fast filtration due to the double filters.
  • Removes a lot of various contaminants.
  • Produces alkaline water.
  • Filters made in USA.

Con's

  • Filters block easily if your water contains Calcium and Magnesium.
  • Not for emergencies as it does not remove giardia, cryptosporidium or e-coli.

Seychelle Dual Filter Water Pitcher (Regular)

Regular Seychelle Dual Pitcher Filter

The Seychelle Dual Filter Water Pitcher is a budget-friendlier alternative if you do not need alkaline water.
Otherwise, it is similar in design and removal rates to the Seychelle pH2O.

Pro’s

  • Fast filtration due to the double filters.
  • Removes a lot of various contaminants.
  • Filters made in USA.

Con's

  • Filters block easily if your water contains Calcium and Magnesium.
  • Not for emergencies as it does not remove giardia, cryptosporidium or e-coli.

ZeroWater ZP 010 - NSF certifed

ZeroWater ZP-010 NSF certified pitcher

The ZeroWater ZP 010 has a few features that sets it apart from the others compared here.

Let's start with the 5-stage filter. Besides the usual carbon layer this filter cartridge also contains negative and positive ion exchange resin.

Combined these 5-stages reduce a lot of contaminants most other pitchers can not handle like chromium-6 or arsenic. Plus this pitcher is NSF certified.

There is only a small downside. Because this filter traps nearly 99% of all dissolved solids, water with high TDS-levels leads to a much shorter lifespan compared to other filters. If your water's TDS levels are normal to low, the filter may even last longer than other filters.

Another unusual detail is the quick fill spigot. You can use it to fill a kettle or glass quickly without lifting the pitcher. That makes it easy to use for children as they do not have to lift this large pitcher to refill their glass.

Pro’s

  • NSF certifed to reduce chromium-6, lead, mercury and chlorine
  • Also reduces arsenic.
  • No need to lift the pitcher to fill a glass thanks to the quick fill spigot.

Con's

  • If your tap water contains a lot of TDS, the filter has a short life span.
  • Replacement filters are relatively expensive.

All in all, the ZeroWater ZP 010 is a noteworthy pitcher, ideal if you need to get rid of chromium-6 or arsenic in your water.

Brondell H2O+ Water Pitcher Filter

Brondell H2O+ Water Pitcher FilterThe Brondell H2O+ Water Pitcher Filter with it's 6-cup capacity is the smallest of the pitcher filters I compare here. That does not have to be a disadvantage. It fit's into your fridge door, and if you just need 6 cups at a time, why use a bigger pitcher and let the water sit in it for too long?

This pitcher comes with a filter change indicator, not electronic though.

The filter element consists of 4-stages. The first stage is designed to remove sediment, followed by an ion-exchange resin stage to reduce heavy metals. The next stage consists of  silver activated carbon to catch chlorine. The last stage is another net to prevent carbon particles entering the filtered water.

This filter is tested and certified by Water Quality Association (WQA) for aesthetic problems caused by chlorine. It does not remove the fluoride your water supplier added from your drinking water.

Brondell water filter pitchers are BPA-free and come in two colors only, blue and white.

In case you have problems with your newly bought item, Brondell offers a 30-day limited warranty. That is a lot less than other manufacturers provide.

Brondell no longer sells this pitcher. Some seller on Amazon still do. But beware, replacement filters will be hard to find in the future.

Why is the Mavea pitcher filter not in the list?

End of 2016 Mavea decided to end the distribution of their products in North America. While online retailers like Amazon still have a large stock of Mavea pitchers and replacement elements, this is going to change soon.

Summary

So what does this all mean?

If you read our filter pitcher buyers' guide, you know that the most important quality is contaminant removal.

This is why you buy a filter, right?

To save money, get your water tested or look at you consumer confidence report to find out what is in your water.

And then select a filter pitcher able to take out these contaminants.

Chlorine removal is an easy task, so you can choose a Brita or any other of the filters from our list.

On the other hand fluoride removal is harder, but Aquagear or Pur pitchers do a good job.

Another common water problem is lead. You have a choice between a Brita with a Longlast filter, the Aquagear pitcher or Pur filters. They all can handle lead.

Missing glass water filter pitcher? We compared them in a separate post.
